We’ve loved him since we were children, during what remains the most optimistic decade we’ve ever lived through: we loved his spiky 90s ‘tude, which made him a Dennis the Menace that actually belonged to us and wasn’t a cultural hand-me-down from Scottish pensioners. Because despite all the missteps, fumbles, and what looks like a dogged commitment to never quite hitting his mark, we love Sonic. Having survived all that, he shines brightly as ever. Against the insurmountable odds of multiple decades passing, the console arm of SEGA that he originated as a mascot of disappearing in a puff of bad management, and (perhaps most astoundingly) a general sense that the games have been a bit bobbins since, well, 1998 if you’re being charitable or 1994 if you aren’t. Is this what 31 years as a sexless mascot does to a mf? Frontiers can look shockingly bleak at times.

You start off in the Sonic 1 Special Stage for around 15 seconds (unless you die) after that the Sonic 2 SS for 15 seconds, after that Blue Spheres for 15 seconds, after that Sonic Mania Catch the UFO for 30 seconds and after that the new Special Stage appears it is a hybrid between the Sonic Mania SS and the Rifts from A Hat in Time (which SEGA bought). Special Stages are back aswell but in a really interesting way! There are secret rings hidden like in Sonic 3 but the stages are interesting. Zones are 2 acts long and lasting around 4 to 5 minutes altough some single acts zones are here.ĭifficulty options are back from Sonic 3 Complete and Sonic Jam. Like its predecessor Sonic Mania it has remastered levels and new ones. Sonic Mania 2 is a 2D Platformer which plays exactly like its predecessors.
